Bev Merry

I have been working at the University of Leeds as a lab Technician since 1978 when I started as a Trainee Technician working first in Pathology and then in Obstetrics and Gynaecology while I did part time study to gain my HNC in Medical laboratory Science at Leeds Polytechnic.

After 9 years in medical research laboratories I then moved onto the University campus to work in the Department of Genetics. After several mergers what was Genetics became part of the School of Biology which is now in the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

I have worked on many projects using techniques such as Histology, Cytology, Cell culture (including stem cells), Molecular Biology and Plant tissue culture as well as plant growth. I have been working with Katie Field since August 2015 when she started in Leeds. I helped her to set up her lab from scratch and have learnt some new techniques such as ELISA and soil extractions working on a project in conjunction with the Knox lab.

I have a particular interest in Health and Safety and, having gained my NEBOSH qualification last year, I recently became the Unite union Health and Safety officer for the University of Leeds branch.
